Azeez, Yusuf, Otele: The New Names Every Nigerian Football Fan Needs to Know

Before the Unity Cup began, most Nigerian football fans could not have told you much about Femi Azeez, Alhassan Yusuf, or Philip Otele. By the time Nigeria lifted the trophy 3-0 over Jamaica on May 31, all three had scored or assisted in the final.

Azeez is the most interesting of the three. He started his career at Sheffield Wednesday, worked his way up through English football, and is now at Millwall where his directness and pace have made him a consistent performer in the Championship. He is not a headline player yet. But at international level in London, with a crowd watching and a final to win, he was the best player on the pitch.

What Chelle Has Found

Chelle said after the Zimbabwe semi-final that he was not happy with Azeez's positional discipline. That public criticism served a purpose. It told Azeez exactly what was needed without embarrassing him in front of the squad. And Azeez responded.

Chelle is building something different to what previous Nigeria coaches have done. He is demanding discipline from players who bring flair, rather than sacrificing one for the other. Yusuf's goal in the third minute of the final came from exactly the kind of chaotic pressing-game situation Chelle has been drilling. He is a midfielder who does what the coach asks, runs hard, and scores when the chance falls to him.

The Betting Angle on These Names

For Nigerian bettors, the practical value of knowing Azeez, Yusuf, and Otele is in the goalscorer markets going into June. These are not players the major odds compilers will price accurately yet because they have only just emerged at international level. The anytime scorer prices on them for the Poland game, where Chelle will likely give them starts again, are probably more generous than they should be.

Azeez to score against Poland at the current price before the squad is announced is worth a small early bet. The same applies to Moffi, who scored in the final and has the hunger and confidence to carry that into Warsaw.
