Osimhen at Galatasaray: Is He in the Right Place Before AFCON 2027?
The Move Made Sense
Galatasaray gave Osimhen what Naples could not in his final season there: a club that builds around him, a league he can dominate, and football every single weekend without the rotation debate. The goals have followed in large numbers.
He is the main man at the Turk Telekom. The team plays to his strengths. When he presses, they press with him. When he runs in behind, the midfield times the ball to his run. For a player of his calibre, that kind of trust from a club structure matters more than people realise.
The Hidden Risk
The Level Has Dropped
The Super Lig is not the Premier League or Serie A. The defending is less organised. Centre-backs are slower to recover. Goalkeepers make more errors. Osimhen is scoring more goals per game, but he is facing less resistance doing it.
That matters because of what comes next. AFCON 2027 will not give him a comfortable Super Lig back four to run at. He will face elite continental defenders who know exactly who he is, who have prepared specifically for him, and who will not gift him the half-spaces he gets in Istanbul every weekend.
What the Numbers Do Not Show
The bigger concern is mental sharpness in tight games. In Istanbul, Galatasaray usually lead by half-time. Osimhen operates in open games, in transitions, in space. AFCON will give him tight, compressed, low-scoring games where he has to manufacture something from nothing.
The last time he played in that environment consistently was with Nigeria at AFCON 2025. He was excellent. But that was with a rhythm of Champions League-level club pressure behind him. The question now is whether the Super Lig keeps that edge or slowly dulls it.
What This Means for Nigeria
The Ideal Scenario
A move to a Champions League club in the summer of 2026 would sharpen everything. Defensive lines that sit deep and organised. Opponents who do not give him a centimetre. That kind of resistance keeps elite strikers at their absolute best.
Arsenal, Chelsea, and a handful of top clubs in France and Germany have all been linked at various points. Any of those moves would be the best possible preparation for AFCON 2027. Chelle will know this privately even if he will not say it publicly.
If He Stays at Galatasaray
It is not a disaster. He is fit, happy, and scoring. A player scoring goals regularly carries form and confidence into international tournaments. That momentum is not nothing.
But staying does mean Chelle needs to work harder in international camps to replicate the intensity he is not getting at club level. The June friendlies against Poland and Portugal are exactly that: tests designed to remind Osimhen what elite defending feels like.
The AFCON 2027 Betting View
Osimhen to be top scorer at AFCON 2027 is a market worth watching. The price will depend heavily on his club situation heading into the tournament. If he moves to a Champions League side and spends the 2026-27 season at the top level, that price deserves serious consideration.
If he stays in Turkey and the goals keep flowing, back him to score at the tournament but be more careful about backing Nigeria to win it all. Tournament football requires the whole squad to step up. Osimhen alone is not enough.
