Paul Put's Challenge: Building a Uganda Team Good Enough to Host an AFCON in 13 Months

Paul Put took the Uganda Cranes job knowing the timeline. AFCON 2027 is in June and July of next year. The tournament arrives in Uganda, Kenya, and Tanzania regardless of results. But automatic qualification does not mean automatic credibility. Put knows that 50,000 Ugandans at Mandela National Stadium in Kampala will not accept an early group stage exit at a home tournament. The pressure is different when the tournament is in your own country.

Put's Uganda side went out in the group stage at AFCON 2025 in Morocco. The group was difficult but Uganda managed only one win across three games and showed the consistent attacking limitation that has followed this team through multiple coaching regimes. The problem is goals. Uganda do not score enough in competitive football.

Where the Improvement Is Coming From

The June friendlies in Morocco are not random. Put chose Tanzania and Madagascar deliberately. Tanzania are a team in good form who will expose any defensive disorganisation. Madagascar are a team that will test Uganda's attacking patience and creativity. Both games are diagnostic. By the time Uganda land back in Kampala after Marrakech, Put should have a clearer picture of which forwards and wide players can break down a compact defensive structure, because Tunisia, Libya, and Botswana in the qualifier groups will all set up defensively and wait for Uganda to make mistakes.

The AFCON 2027 qualifier draw gave Uganda a workable path. Botswana at home on Matchday One is a must-win. Tunisia at home is the test that defines the campaign.

What Bettors Should Watch Before Backing Uganda

There are two specific signals to watch before committing to any long-term bet on Uganda at AFCON 2027. First: how they perform against Tanzania in Marrakech on June 5. A win or a competitive draw against a team in better current form tells you the rebuild is working.

Second: the Botswana result in September. Uganda at home against Botswana on the first qualifying matchday is the lowest-risk game in the group. If they cannot win that comfortably, back away from Uganda for the rest of the campaign. If they win it 2-0 or 3-0 with a clean sheet, the confidence builds and the Tunisia game in November becomes a proper contest.
