Chipolopolo AFCON 2027 Qualifier Tips: Where the Value Is in Group I

Group I is a classic AFCON qualifier shape. One clear favourite, two sides scrapping for second, and one team that nobody expects to challenge. Algeria are the favourite. Zambia and Togo are the scrap. Burundi are the team everyone is supposed to beat. That structure tells you almost everything you need to know about where the money should go across the six matchdays.
The mistake punters make in groups like this is treating every fixture as a standalone bet. The smarter approach is to identify the three or four moments in the campaign where the entire qualification picture pivots, and load up there rather than spreading thin across every game.
How the Group Plays Out
Algeria win the group with room to spare. They will probably finish on 14 or 15 points from a possible 18, with the only realistic slip being a draw away to Zambia or an awkward trip to Togo. The top-spot market on Algeria will be short from day one and shorter still after matchday two. If you want it on the slip, back it before the first ball is kicked.
The race for second is the real story. Zambia start as the slight favourite for that slot because the squad has more European pedigree and the form line through 2025 and 2026 is more consistent than Togo's. But Togo are not far behind, and home and away against them will likely decide everything.
Where Zambia Get Through
The qualification arithmetic for Chipolopolo is straightforward. Take six points off Burundi. Get three minimum from Togo across the two games, ideally four. Steal a draw against Algeria in Ndola, and avoid being thumped in Algiers. That puts Zambia on roughly 11 points, which is almost always enough for second in a group of this shape. It is achievable. It is not guaranteed.
Where It Could Go Wrong
The two scenarios that derail Zambia are losing at home to Togo or dropping points to Burundi away. Either of those single results turns the campaign into a coin flip on the final matchday. Both are realistic risks, and any bettor backing Zambia to qualify needs to size the stake with that in mind.
The Markets to Target Across the Campaign
Daka top scorer of Group I is the standout long-term bet. He is the highest pedigree striker in the group, plays most matches, and will score in every Zambia home game. The price will be short but it is still the right side.
Zambia to win to nil in the two Burundi fixtures is the safer single. Algeria vs Zambia under 2.5 goals is the niche bet because Avram Grant sides do not get blown out. Togo vs Zambia in Lome is the trap game, do not bet either side outright, the draw is the value at almost any number above 3.00.
Markets to Avoid
Skip the away-to-Algeria exotic markets. Skip the first-goalscorer market in any of the Togo games, the prices are tight and the variance is brutal. Skip multi-leg accumulators that combine Zambia win outright with Burundi results, because a single qualifier upset wipes the whole slip.
