How Nigeria Can Still Qualify for AFCON 2027 From Group L
After the defeat in Bissau, many Nigerian fans are asking one question. Can the Super Eagles still reach AFCON 2027? The honest answer is yes, but the margin for error is now very small.
How the qualification place works
Tanzania are already through to the finals because they are co-hosts, along with Kenya and Uganda in their own groups. Because of that, Group L offers only one extra place, which goes to the highest-placed team that is not a host. The finals will take place in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda from 19 June to 17 July 2027.
So Nigeria are not simply fighting for a top-two finish. They must finish above Guinea-Bissau, with Madagascar also still in the race. Every point against the other two teams matters, because Tanzania cannot take the place whatever happens.
The fixtures that remain
Nigeria have four matches left. Two are against Tanzania in the November window between 9 and 17 November. The other two are at home to Guinea-Bissau and away to Madagascar, and they come in the final window between 22 and 30 March 2027.
Guinea-Bissau lead the group on six points and Nigeria have three, so the gap is one result. Nigeria cannot afford to treat the Tanzania games as easy points, because a slip there would make the March fixtures almost impossible. Winning both in November would put the pressure back on Guinea-Bissau.
Why the head-to-head matters
If Nigeria and Guinea-Bissau end level on points, the rules look at the games between the two teams before goal difference. Guinea-Bissau won 3-0 in Bissau, so Nigeria must win the return fixture and will need to win by a big margin. A narrow home win may not be enough on its own in that situation. Check the official CAF rules for the exact order of the tie-breakers.
That makes the home game against Guinea-Bissau the biggest match of the campaign. It is also why the goals scored in November could prove important. Nigerian supporters should watch the group table closely after every matchday.
