Super Eagles Beaten 3-0 in Bissau: What Went Wrong and What Comes Next

Nigerian fans woke up to a result very few expected. The Super Eagles lost 3-0 away to Guinea-Bissau in their second AFCON 2027 qualifier, four days after beating Madagascar 2-1 in Uyo. It was a heavy night for a team that reached the semi-finals of the Cup of Nations in January 2026.

What happened in Bissau

Franculino Dju put Guinea-Bissau ahead in the 15th minute, and captain Mama Balde doubled the lead in the 66th. Alvaro Djalo then added a third deep into stoppage time to finish the job. Nigeria started seven Premier League players, yet reports describe a side that was outplayed for long spells.

The week had started better, with a tense 2-1 win over Madagascar at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo. That win had been far from smooth, because Nigeria had to come from behind to get it. Looking back, the Madagascar game was a warning that the team still needs to find its rhythm.

Where Group L stands now

Guinea-Bissau lead the group on six points with a goal difference of plus five, after beating Tanzania away and then Nigeria. Nigeria sit second on three points, while Madagascar and Tanzania have one point each. Tanzania are already guaranteed a place at the finals as co-hosts, so only one more spot from this group is on offer.

That is why this defeat hurts so much. Guinea-Bissau now hold the advantage in the head-to-head record, and that record is checked before overall goal difference if the two teams finish level. Nigeria must therefore think about winning the return match at home, and winning it by a good margin. That is a tall order against a team in this form.

What the Eagles must fix

Nobody in the Nigerian press is pretending this was a good night. Guinea-Bissau scored early, scored again while Nigeria were still chasing, and then killed the game at the end. A team with this much experience in Europe should have found a better answer.

The next chance to respond comes in the November window, when Nigeria play Tanzania twice. Those games will not be easy just because Tanzania are already qualified, since a co-host with nothing to lose can be a difficult opponent. Nigeria really need maximum points from those two games to stay in the race.

A note for bettors
