The Stakes Are Real Even Though It Is a Friendly
This is the last 90 minutes Ghana play before the World Cup begins. Two weeks from now the Black Stars walk out at BMO Field in Toronto for the Panama opener. Mohammed Kudus
Kudus is the player Ghana run through. His season at West Ham gave him another year of Premier League minutes against top-six defences, and his role for the national team is more advanced than his club role. He drifts off the right, comes inside onto his left, and gets shots away from the edge of the box. Against a Welsh midfield that does not have a real ball-winner, he should see plenty of the ball in dangerous areas. Expect him to take five or six shots.
Antoine Semenyo
Semenyo had a breakout year at Bournemouth and his pace is the biggest single weapon Ghana have. Wales play a high line when they have the ball and a deep line when they do not. Either way, Semenyo's runs in behind are the most repeatable goal threat in this match. If he gets the right service from Kudus, he scores.
Mohammed Salisu
Queiroz has settled on Salisu as the leader of this defence and the centre-back partnership with Djiku is the most stable Ghana have had in years. A friendly against a one-paced Welsh attack is the perfect tune-up. A clean sheet here is the baseline.
How Wales Hurt Ghana
If they hurt Ghana at all, it comes from set pieces. Their squad has aerial threats and Ghana have been vulnerable from corners over the last two years. The other route is a long ball over the top to a runner if Salisu and Djiku push too high. Both are containable with a basic professional performance.
The Pattern of the Game
Ghana take control inside 20 minutes. Wales sit deeper than they want to and look for the counter that never quite arrives. Queiroz will rotate after the hour mark to give the bench minutes. The first hour is when the goals come. The last 30 minutes is when the game flattens out.
